Swedish retail confidence jumped to 112.9 in July, its strongest level since March 2022. Household confidence improved to 97.1 but remained weaker than normal, according to the latest survey.

The overall economic tendency indicator rose to 104.7, a level the National Institute of Economic Research classifies as stronger than normal. Retailers reported a much stronger mood. Households improved on all five questions, but expectations for their own finances and willingness to make major purchases still dragged. Buying a car in the next 12 months was considered very unlikely.

The apparent contradiction matters: business sentiment can turn before families feel ready to spend. The survey collected business responses from 1 to 23 July and household responses from 1 to 14 July. It measures sentiment, not a forecast and not any family's budget.

For residents trying to read Sweden's economy, the signal is business recovery alongside caution at the kitchen table.
