Fixing your electricity price is becoming more expensive

Households looking for protection against higher electricity prices this autumn and winter face a more expensive route to certainty. The contract that locks in a price also leaves an important part of the bill in their hands.

Prices for fixed-rate electricity contracts have risen recently, Sveriges Radio reports. Thomas Björkström of Konsumenternas energimarknadsbyrå, the consumer energy advice bureau, says consumers want to know in advance what they will pay.

A fixed-price contract charges the same amount per kilowatt-hour throughout the agreed period, regardless of movements in the market. Typical terms run for one, two or three years.

The bureau’s contract guidance says households should check the commitment period and renewal conditions. Leaving early can trigger a termination fee, and some contracts renew automatically unless cancelled in time.

The protection covers the unit price, rather than a guaranteed monthly total. Using more electricity still raises the cost, even while the price per kilowatt-hour stays unchanged.
