Sweden reviews new biogas incentives and gas security
The review will examine support for domestic biogas and ways to make western Sweden’s gas grid less vulnerable.
Sweden has opened a policy review aimed at producing more biogas and reducing fossil-fuel reliance, with the security of industrial gas supplies at its centre.
The Energy Agency says it will assess existing incentives and propose complementary measures. The work must account for EU state-aid rules, total-defence needs and any necessary legislative changes.
The assignment focuses particularly on biogas connected to the gas grid in western Sweden. That network supplies industries that use gas as process fuel or raw material, including operations considered important to society.
The grid currently depends mainly on one entry point from Denmark. The government assignment therefore asks the agency to examine additional entry points and measures that could increase nationally produced, grid-connected biogas.
The agency will consult environmental, agricultural and energy-market authorities. Its report is due on 12 August 2027. An online information meeting is planned for 9 October, with written submissions accepted until 31 October 2026.
