More than 50,000 march for climate weeks before Sweden votes
More than 50,000 people marched through central Stockholm on Sunday, bringing 280 organisations onto the streets three weeks before Sweden’s national election.

The procession moved from Vasaparken along Odengatan and Sveavägen to Gustav Adolfs torg under the banner “United for the climate”. SVT reported more than 50,000 participants, while Sveriges Natur said police counted well above that figure as the line stretched from the park to Norra Bantorget.
Naturskyddsföreningen organised the non-partisan march with Rebellmammorna, Rebellpapporna and Researchers’ Desk. The coalition ranged from trade unions and churches to researchers, rights groups and environmental organisations, and called for more ambitious, science-based climate policy after the election.
Naturskyddsföreningen chair Beatrice Rindevall said political leaders had underestimated public support for stronger climate policy. Organisers expected about 10,000 people before turnout vastly exceeded that estimate.
Sweden votes on 13 September. The Election Authority says early voting inside Sweden begins on Wednesday, placing the demonstration at the start of the campaign’s decisive final stretch.
