SMHI warns 70-100 mm rain could flood eastern Norrbotten

SMHI has issued a yellow warning for parts of eastern Norrbotten, where 70-100 millimetres of rain could cause local flooding through Saturday morning.

The warning covers Friday from 09:00 until Saturday at 12:00. SMHI says the risk applies to parts of eastern Norrbotten. SVT reports that Boden, Kalix, Luleå, Älvsbyn and Överkalix are affected.

SMHI says basements and stormwater systems may flood, while roads and underpasses could become dangerous. Drivers should not enter standing water and should allow extra time because visibility may be poor and aquaplaning is possible.

Residents are advised to move belongings that water could damage, check whether basements can be sealed, and clear gutters, storm drains and other water channels.

The agency says local totals may vary considerably and the final rainfall amount remains uncertain.
