Sweden’s Police Authority says 2.4 million passports expire in 2027, roughly 500,000 more than in a normal year, and is expanding appointments to prevent new queues and delays.

The surge follows the mass renewal of passports in 2022, when travel resumed after the pandemic. Police are asking people to renew during the coming months even if their current passport remains valid.

Most available appointments are during weekday daytime hours and outside the largest cities. Families can now book several applicants together, while guardians can provide digital consent for children through Mina sidor.

Some steps can be completed online before the required visit to a passport office. Applicants must be Swedish citizens and bring a valid physical Swedish identity document.

Police have begun a national information campaign and say appointment capacity will continue to expand ahead of next year’s peak.
