Sweden extends B-licence theory-test validity to one year

People who pass Sweden’s category B theory test from Wednesday now have one year to pass the driving test, instead of four months.

The longer period applies only to theory tests passed on or after 19 August 2026, according to Transportstyrelsen’s announcement. Earlier passes keep their four-month validity.
About 9,000 people a year have had to repeat an already-passed theory test because they did not complete a successful driving test before the deadline. The regulator said the shorter limit also pushed some learners into road tests before they felt ready.
The change follows a government-commissioned review of category B driver training. It brings the category closer to the validity periods used for other licence types and is expected to reduce repeat tests and pressure on learners after an unsuccessful driving test.
