EU Prescriptions Need Paper In Swedish Pharmacies

EU prescriptions usually need to be on paper before a Swedish pharmacy can use them. A digital prescription from another country is not enough today, and some medicines cannot be dispensed in Sweden even with the right document.

The Swedish eHealth Agency says prescribed medicines in Sweden require a valid prescription from healthcare services. Swedish pharmacists may dispense medicine, but they are not allowed to issue or renew a prescription. If you need a new Swedish prescription, the route is healthcare, with 1177 as the advice line for where to seek care.

For a prescription from another EU member state, the Swedish rule is narrower than the general EU promise. E-hälsomyndigheten says it must be a paper prescription for cross-border use. Foreign e-prescriptions cannot currently be handled by Swedish pharmacies, and a prescription emailed by a doctor and printed by the patient is not treated as a valid paper prescription.

The document should carry enough information for the pharmacist to understand it: patient name and date of birth, issue date, the doctor's name, professional title, contact details, work address and signature, plus the generic medicine name, form, quantity, strength and dosage. Your Europe gives the same practical reason for using the common name: brand names and availability can differ between countries.

Two limits matter at the counter. E-hälsomyndigheten says medicines classified in Sweden as narcotics or banned substances may not be dispensed from EU prescriptions, including some sleeping pills, painkillers and ADHD medicines. The medicine also has to be available in Sweden, and the pharmacist must judge the prescription valid.

Payment is the other surprise. The agency's purchase guidance says EU citizens may be covered by Sweden's high-cost threshold only with a Swedish prescription. If you buy prescribed medicine in Sweden on a prescription from another EU member state, you pay the full price at the pharmacy, save the receipt, and may have to ask your home country's health insurance system for reimbursement later.

Before travelling or moving, ask your doctor for a real paper cross-border prescription, written with the generic name and full dosage details. For regular medicine, also check whether the product is sold in Sweden and whether you need a Swedish appointment before the current supply runs out.
