Skatteverket ID Cards Need An In Person Visit

A Skatteverket ID card can make daily life in Sweden easier, but a personal identity number is not enough by itself. You must be population registered, pay first, book the right service centre and prove your identity in person.

Skatteverket says its ID card can be used in Sweden to confirm your identity and age at places such as a pharmacy, bank or store. The card also includes Swedish e-identification from AB Svenska Pass for Skatteverket e-services, according to the agency's ID card guidance.

The card is different from a national ID card issued by the police. Skatteverket says its card cannot replace a passport for travel outside Sweden. The Swedish Police say passport offices issue national ID cards to Swedish citizens, and those applications are handled through police passport offices.

For the Skatteverket card, the first practical test is eligibility. Applicants must have paid the SEK 400 fee, be listed in the Swedish Population Register, have a Swedish personal identity number, be at least 13 and be able to prove their identity. Under-18 applicants need written consent from their guardians.

The order matters. Skatteverket says the fee must be paid before the appointment, and not every state service centre issues ID cards. Bring a receipt or bank statement. You cannot pay the fee at the service centre, and the agency says the application fee is not refunded if the application is refused.

The identity check is often the part newcomers underestimate. Skatteverket's application page lists approved documents, an approved attestor, a Swedish residence permit or, in some cases, a combined assessment of other approved documents. You do not need to bring a population registration certificate.

Skatteverket says an ID card is normally ready in about two weeks, but missing information can delay it or require another visit. You collect it yourself within two months and bring the application receipt. If you change your name or receive a new personal identity number, the agency says you must apply for a new ID card yourself.
