The 14-day rule that can undo an online purchase

An unwanted online order in Sweden usually comes with a clock that starts after delivery. The statutory right of withdrawal is often 14 days when a consumer buys from a company at a distance, including on the internet or by telephone.

For goods, Konsumentverket says the days normally start counting on the day after you receive or collect the item. For a service, the count usually begins the day after the agreement is made. This is different from a complaint about a faulty item, where other consumer rights apply.

Tell the company clearly that you are withdrawing. A short email that names the order and states the decision is easier to prove than a phone call. Keep the sent message, order confirmation and any return tracking. The important step is giving notice within the period, even if the parcel reaches the seller later.

There are exceptions. Custom-made goods, some sealed hygiene products after the seal is broken, and certain digital services can be treated differently. A purchase from a private individual does not carry the same statutory distance-selling right, and a shop purchase has no automatic withdrawal period unless the retailer offers one.

The seller may require you to pay return postage when that information was provided correctly. The product can also lose value if you handle it more than needed to establish its nature and function. Opening a delivery is not automatically fatal; using the item as though you already owned it may matter.

If the company never gave the required information about withdrawal, the legal period may be extended, but that is a dispute-sensitive question. Do not send a product to an address found through a search without checking the seller's instructions; keep proof that the return went to the company or return service it named.

Do not confuse withdrawal with goodwill terms such as open purchase or exchange. The law sets the basic distance-selling right, while a company may offer something more generous. The useful sequence is to check the seller, calculate the date, send an unambiguous notice and save every trace.
