Kronofogden Letters Need A Reply Before Payment

A Kronofogden payment letter needs two separate responses. First you must confirm that you received the letter. Then you must either pay, dispute the claim, or risk a decision that can lead to enforcement and a credit-record problem.

The first response is not acceptance. Kronofogden says a person who confirms receipt is only proving that the letter arrived and that they know the claim exists. If you do not answer, the authority can try to reach you at home or at work.

After receipt, the next clock is the time for explanation. The number of days is written in the letter and is counted from the day you said you received it. During that period, decide whether the claim is right, whether you can pay, or whether you need to object.

If the claim is wrong, Kronofogden tells recipients to object within the stated time. The applicant can then ask for the case to go to court. If the court later rules against you, court costs may be added.

Doing nothing is the expensive option. If you neither pay nor object, Kronofogden can issue a decision, called an utslag, saying that you must pay or do what the claim requires. The person or company claiming money can then ask Kronofogden to enforce it, including through salary or property.

The credit-record point is often misunderstood. Kronofogden does not itself decide payment remarks. IMY says credit-information companies keep those records, and a private person normally risks a payment remark after an utslag, not merely because an application has arrived. For private individuals, the remark must usually be removed no later than three years after the registered event.

The practical move is simple but time-sensitive: open the letter or digital mailbox, confirm receipt, photograph or save the pages, write down the deadline, and then choose the right track. If you are away from Sweden, arrange for someone reliable to check official mail before a deadline starts moving without you noticing.
