Skatteverket ID cards could end in March 2027

The Government has proposed closing Skatteverket's ID-card service on 1 March 2027 and moving state identity cards to the Police. Cards already issued by Skatteverket would remain valid until their expiry date.

The proposal says applications submitted before the change would still be processed. Skatteverket cards are normally valid for five years, and applications could be made through 28 February 2027.
The Police is due to begin issuing a new state electronic identity card on 1 December 2026. For people registered in Sweden who are not citizens, the physical carrier may contain similar identity details to a national ID card, but it would not be a travel document.
Current Skatteverket cards are available to people registered in Sweden who meet the agency's identity requirements. The Government says the later March shutdown gives authorities time to complete the handover; Skatteverket had asked to stop issuing cards in December.
The plan is a Council on Legislation referral, not yet a law passed by Parliament.
