Six national agencies must now alert the Police, Security Service or Migration Agency when information gives them reason to believe someone is in Sweden without permission. The new information duty took effect on Monday, 13 July.

The rule applies to the Public Employment Service, Social Insurance Agency, Prison and Probation Service, Enforcement Authority, Pensions Agency and Tax Agency, according to SVT's report.

The government says the measure is intended to reduce the shadow society and help authorities locate people who do not have the right to remain in the country. It requires agencies to share relevant information proactively, rather than only answering a request.

An earlier political agreement envisaged a wider duty across the public sector. Several services were later exempted after criticism from professional groups and unions, leaving the six named state agencies covered by the law.
