The Swedish Chemicals Agency is reviewing the approvals of 38 agricultural pesticides that can form the persistent PFAS substance TFA.
TFA has been detected in groundwater across Sweden. Although it is not classified among the most hazardous PFAS chemicals, Sveriges Radio reported links to reproductive harm and noted that it does not naturally break down.
The Social Democrats want Sweden to follow Denmark and prohibit PFAS use in agriculture. Denmark banned 33 relevant pesticides last summer.
The Sweden Democrats oppose the proposed blanket ban, raising concerns about food production. The government says it will present a national PFAS action plan later this summer.
No Swedish prohibition has yet been decided. The immediate administrative development is the Chemicals Agency's review, while the wider ban remains a political proposal contested by the parties.
