The personal identity number is the key Swedish identifier most newcomers are waiting for. It is assigned when you are first listed in the Swedish Population Register, which normally depends on moving to Sweden with the intention to live here for at least one year.

A coordination number is different. It is for people who have never been listed in the Population Register but still need an official identifier because they have a connection to Sweden. Short assignments, tax steps and certain ownership or authority contacts can fall into this route.

The coordination number is useful, but it is not a full replacement for a personal identity number in everyday life. Some banks, landlords, employers and digital services may still ask for more documents, and their internal checks can vary.

If you receive a coordination number and later become registered as living in Sweden, the Swedish Tax Agency says the coordination number is replaced by a personal identity number. Keep old records, because payroll and bank systems may still contain the earlier identifier.

Two Swedish identifiers

The safest question is not, 'Which number is better?' It is, 'Which route matches my stay, my documents and what I need to do next?' If you are staying less than one year, do not assume the population registration route applies.

Two Swedish identifiers

  • A personal identity number usually follows population registration.
  • A coordination number can be assigned to someone not listed in the Population Register.
  • A coordination number can later be replaced by a personal identity number.
  • Banks and private companies can still ask for additional checks.
