The first week in Sweden can feel like a chain of locked doors: the bank asks for an ID number, the ID number process asks for an address, and the address often depends on paperwork you are still gathering. The way through is to separate urgent setup from long-term setup.
Start with your identity trail. If you plan to live in Sweden for at least one year, prepare your Moving to Sweden notification with the Swedish Tax Agency, save the receipt, and book the required identity check at a state service centre. Bring original documents, not only scans.
Write your name exactly where mail is delivered before important letters start arriving. In apartments, include the apartment number and any c/o name you rely on. A surprising amount of Swedish admin still ends with a letter in a postbox.

Keep photos of receipts, but keep the originals ready.
First-week essentials
Do not wait for the perfect setup before doing practical basics. A prepaid phone plan, a transit app, a local email folder for authorities, and a notes file with dates and case numbers will save you from repeating your story every time someone asks for it.
First-week essentials
- Submit the Moving to Sweden notification if you plan to live in Sweden for one year or more.
- Book the identity check and bring original identity documents.
- Put your name on the mailbox or door before decision letters arrive.
- Keep appointment confirmations, receipts and case numbers in one place.
By the end of week one, you do not need every Swedish system solved. You need a submitted identity path, a reachable address, a paper trail, and a realistic list of what depends on the personal identity number later.
