A Swedish bank account and BankID are often treated as one problem, but they are really two steps. First you need a bank willing to onboard you. Then, once you meet that bank's requirements, digital ID may become possible through the bank or another approved e-ID route.

Expect different answers from different banks and even different branches. Bring your passport or national ID, residence permit card if relevant, employment contract or admission letter, Swedish address details, tax documents and any receipt from the Swedish Tax Agency.

Ask for the smallest working setup first: a basic account for salary and bills. If the full card, savings, credit and BankID package is not possible immediately, a basic account can still move your life forward while the longer identity process continues.

Freja can help with some public e-services, and the Swedish Tax Agency points newcomers without eID toward Freja for the Moving to Sweden flow. It is not the same as having BankID everywhere, so test each service you need before relying on it.

Banking without shortcuts

When a bank refuses or asks for more, request the reason in writing and keep a list of documents requested. Your next appointment will be easier if you can show exactly what was missing last time.

Banking without shortcuts

  • Bring ID, residence documents, address details and proof of work or study.
  • Ask for a basic salary-and-bills account first.
  • Bank policies vary, so written reasons help when you try again.
  • Freja can help with some public e-services but does not replace BankID everywhere.
