Øresund surplus could fund road and rail upgrades
Skåne must negotiate a priority list for cost-effective regional projects, but no funding or construction decision has been made.
Future Swedish revenues from the Øresund fixed link could help finance road and rail upgrades in the region. The government has asked Skåne County Administrative Board to identify which measures should take priority.
The new assignment covers analysis and negotiations with affected municipalities and regions. It does not allocate money or approve a construction project.
Trafikverket assesses that land-based road and rail infrastructure will be the main constraint on transport capacity across Øresund through 2050. The board must identify cost-effective measures that could create the greatest regional value.
Socio-economic profitability is to guide priorities. Cost, transport-policy goals, preparedness, total defence, feasibility and dependencies between projects must also be considered, together with possible co-financing.
Trafikverket has previously estimated that future Swedish bridge revenues could total about SEK 25 billion through 2050 at 2024 prices, but the estimate is uncertain. Any agreements require further legal review and government or parliamentary approval. The final report is due by 1 November 2028.
