Sweden backs 14 bids for €43.4m in EU transport funds

Fourteen transport projects now have Sweden’s backing to seek about €43.4 million from an EU fund. That national endorsement clears an essential step, but it does not mean Brussels has awarded any money.

The Government said on Thursday that it had endorsed all 14 applications to the Connecting Europe Facility. The 2026 call supports planning and construction across the EU’s trans-European transport network, known as TEN-T.

The applications cover rail links and planning in northern Sweden, the Norrbotnia Line between Skellefteå and Luleå, and preliminary work on the missing Oslo–Stockholm rail link. Other bids concern ports in Gothenburg, Trelleborg and Karlshamn, a Stockholm–Turku green shipping corridor, freight charging and greener operations at Arlanda Airport.

Several projects are still at the study or planning stage. The endorsement allows the applicants to compete for EU support; the European Commission will assess the bids before any grant is approved. The call is expected to be the last in the EU’s current 2021–2027 budget period.

The list also reaches beyond ordinary passenger transport. Some applications are explicitly designed for dual use or military mobility, including border bridges on the E8 and rail-port preparedness in northern Sweden. That makes the funding round part of both Sweden’s infrastructure programme and its wider resilience planning.
