Sweden's government has approved two offshore wind farms and a major land-based development while rejecting 11 other offshore applications.
Fyrskeppet Offshore is planned east of Söderhamn, while Vidar would be built southwest of Strömstad. Together, the offshore projects are planned to produce up to 19 terawatt-hours of electricity annually.
The government also approved further development at Markbygden outside Piteå. The land-based project could provide up to 600 megawatts, according to the Liberals.
Climate Minister Romina Pourmokhtari said the rejected projects would have an unacceptable effect on Sweden's defence capability, including military exercises and operations.
The government also intends to replace the existing offshore application process with an auction-based system. Approval does not mean construction begins immediately; the developers must still complete financing, grid and implementation work.
