More than 100 parties are standing in Sweden's 2026 elections, prompting the Election Authority to call for a review of the registration rules.

The authority says the number of small parties has increased at successive elections and believes creating and registering a party is currently too easy.

Sveriges Radio's report did not specify what new threshold the authority wants, whether it is proposing higher signature requirements or how established local parties might be affected.

The request is therefore a call for a review, not a decided rule change. Any restriction would require a legislative process and would need to balance manageable election administration against citizens' ability to organise politically and contest elections.

The issue is particularly relevant ahead of the September vote because changes cannot be assumed to apply to parties already registered for this election.
