Sweden’s Speaker has refused Left Party MP Mohamed Ali’s two-week request for personal leave, preventing a substitute from taking his place under that application.

Andreas Norlén told Sveriges Radio on Wednesday that the agreement governing such leave concerns MPs suspected of a crime. Ali has not been formally notified of any criminal suspicion.

Ali reported sick on Monday, when the requested leave period ended. Norlén told TV4 there would be no pay deduction for the earlier period because parliament had delayed deciding his application. He accepted responsibility alongside the party group leaders and parliament.

Left Party parliamentary leader Samuel Gonzalez Westling said the party accepted the decision. Ali is expected to return to his parliamentary duties after his sick leave.
