A technology layoff can trigger two deadlines with different consequences. One sits in redundancy paperwork; the other hides in the permit decision—and confusing them can cut short the search for a new job.

The Swedish Migration Agency says a worker may remain for three months after the last working day to look for a new job, but only while the existing permit remains valid. If it expires sooner, the shorter date controls. The decision letter and residence card show whether the permit is tied to both employer and occupation, or occupation only.

If a new employer or profession requires a fresh permit, apply before the old permit expires. The agency says work may begin once the application is submitted; the new employer must first have advertised the job in Sweden, the EU/EEA and Switzerland.

A new application filed from 16 June 2026 normally needs at least SEK 34,470 monthly pay, plus occupation-standard terms. Some listed occupations and qualifying young tech or life-science companies have exceptions; do not assume “tech” alone qualifies. EU Blue Card holders must separately notify the agency when employment ends or changes.

In the first 72 hours: get a document stating the final employment date; download the permit decision; record its expiry and restrictions; ask HR for insurance and employment records; and tell recruiters the exact date by which an application must be filed.

This is general reporting, not legal advice. Different residence grounds can change the result; use the agency’s case-specific guidance before acting.
