Sweden's government has ordered Trafikverket to identify and carry out cost reductions on the planned Norrbotniabanan railway between Skellefteå and Luleå.

The government says estimated costs have risen substantially. The transport agency must review the design and delivery of the route, identify savings that preserve the railway's intended function and report how the measures affect the project.

The Skellefteå–Luleå section remains in the planning phase, while work on other parts of Norrbotniabanan is at construction or detailed-design stage. The new assignment does not cancel the northern section or announce a revised opening date.

Trafikverket must begin reporting annually from 2027. That will give the government a recurring account of savings, cost development and progress before further investment decisions are made.
