Surveyed snus users report less littering, but pouch counts stay flat
Nearly three in ten snus users in a new Novus survey said they sometimes throw used pouches on the ground, even as almost eight in ten rated their own littering below that of other snus users. #DSEngineNow

The poll, commissioned by Håll Sverige Rent and reported by TV4 on Monday morning, covered 1,084 people aged 16–84 who regularly smoke, use snus or vape. Among snus users, 29% said they sometimes litter pouches; 24% of smokers said they discard cigarette butts outdoors. TV4 did not publish subgroup counts or a margin of error.
Self-reported snus littering was lower than in 2020. But Håll Sverige Rent said its street, square and nature counts show no drop in the number of pouches found. The group suggested that rising use of white nicotine pouches may be offsetting better behaviour by individual users; that is an explanation, not a demonstrated cause.
Another gap is knowledge: seven in ten surveyed snus users said they did not know pouches contain plastic, chemicals and toxins. Håll Sverige Rent says nicotine litter is increasing as white snus grows, and estimates that litter cleanup costs taxpayers hundreds of millions of kronor a year. TV4 did not publish a cost breakdown for snus alone.
