Tony Haddou: Family rules risk “abortion or deportation”

Left Party migration spokesperson Tony Haddou warned that the Tidö government’s proposal to recheck sponsors’ income and housing at family-permit renewal could mean “abortion or deportation” after a job loss or another child. It also proposes a two-year wait for most temporary-permit sponsors.

MPs debated the government bill ahead of Thursday’s vote. The maintenance requirement currently applies mainly when a family member first applies. The bill would extend it to renewals.

“With these rule changes, people in Sweden will end up facing abortion or deportation,” Haddou said, according to Göteborgs-Posten. Centre Party MP Niels Paarup-Petersen made the same argument.

Moderate committee chair Viktor Wärnick called the rhetoric “disgusting” and argued that people who want relatives in Sweden should be able to support them. Social Democrat Ola Möller said the proposal makes deportation a recurring feature of the rules.

The parliamentary committee recommends approval. The Social Democrats, Left Party, Centre Party and Green Party oppose the proposed two-year waiting rule for most sponsors holding temporary permits and the wider maintenance test.
