Viktor Wärnick chairs committee backing tighter family-reunification rules

Sweden's Social Insurance Committee, chaired by Moderate MP Viktor Wärnick, has backed tighter family-reunification rules, moving a two-year main waiting rule and wider maintenance tests toward a parliamentary vote this week.

The committee report recommends that MPs approve the government bill. It would require most sponsors with temporary permits to have lived in Sweden with a permit for at least two years before relatives can qualify. Exceptions include unaccompanied children and refugees in some situations.

Maintenance requirements would apply in more situations, including applications to extend a permit. The changes are proposed to take effect on 1 October 2026.

The chamber is scheduled to debate the report on 12 August and vote on 13 August. The report carries 16 reservations, showing opposition remains.
