Migrationsverket faces review of religious-conversion asylum cases

Sweden has appointed former state secretary Dan Ericsson to review how the Migration Agency handles asylum cases in which a person cites religious conversion.

People at risk of persecution because of religion can qualify for international protection. The government says conversion cases are often difficult because officials may need to assess personal convictions and an internal change that cannot be established through a single document.

Under the government directive, Ericsson must map and analyse current handling, evaluate the effect of earlier recommendations from the Swedish Agency for Public Management and compile an overview of knowledge about religious conversion with relevant experts and organisations.

The stated aim is more consistent and legally secure decisions. The directive starts a review; it does not itself change asylum eligibility or decide an individual application.

The coordinator must deliver the final report by 31 December 2027.
