Sweden's government has asked the Gender Equality Agency to examine how social media affects boys and young men, including their choices, wellbeing and attitudes towards women.

The assignment covers open platforms, gaming environments and closed online groups. It specifically includes content associated with the so-called manosphere and asks the agency to assess links to gender norms, misogyny, mental ill-health and violence.

Officials must compile existing knowledge, identify gaps and consider how online communities influence education, work, relationships and participation in society. The agency may propose measures after consulting relevant authorities and organisations.

The decision does not establish that a particular platform or type of content causes a stated harm, and it creates no new restriction for users or companies. It is a national evidence review. The final report is due by 15 December 2027.
