Sweden's government has asked the National Food Agency to investigate food labels and marketing that may mislead consumers even when the wording technically complies with existing rules.
The review will cover prepacked food as well as information on shelves, in advertising and online. Officials must examine how consumers understand names, images and claims, and whether presentation can create a false impression about ingredients, origin or quality.
The agency will consult the Swedish Consumer Agency and compare approaches in other Nordic countries. It may recommend guidance, enforcement changes or new rules if the evidence shows that current protection is insufficient.
No product has been declared unlawful by this assignment, and no labelling requirement changes immediately. An interim report is due by 1 June 2027 and the final report by 1 February 2028.
