Sweden orders new maternity-care safety measures

Sweden has ordered a national push to make maternity and childbirth care safer after inspectors identified needs that require action. The work covers information, evidence and access, but its timetable stretches into 2028.

The government assignment directs the National Board of Health and Welfare, Socialstyrelsen, to build on needs identified by the Health and Social Care Inspectorate, IVO.

Socialstyrelsen must run an information effort on safe childbirth and existing guidance for pregnancy, delivery and the period afterwards. It must also analyse what measures are needed for good, safe care for women and babies.

The authority has been told to consider equal access to high-quality care across the country and consult regions, professional bodies, patient organisations and other national health agencies.

The first report is due on 26 February 2027. The final account and results must reach the Government Offices by 29 February 2028.
