Sweden launches new tool to target suicide prevention

Swedish municipalities and regions now have a national tool for deciding which suicide-prevention measures to prioritise, as new figures underline the scale of the challenge.
The Public Health Agency introduced the support on Thursday. It is designed to steer resources towards measures with the strongest evidence and greatest potential effect for groups most in need.
The online tool compares 39 interventions by evidence, wider benefits, feasibility, scalability, cost and relevance in Sweden. Users can filter work across schools, healthcare, social services, transport, workplaces, media, law and civil society.
The agency said 1,220 people died by suicide in Sweden in 2025, nine fewer than in 2024.
The agency has also opened a national unit to analyse suicide cases and strengthen preventive work. The tool supports Sweden’s 2025–2034 mental-health and suicide-prevention strategy.
