Sweden's Moderate Party wants a domestic-violence conviction to disqualify a person from obtaining Swedish citizenship, Radio Sweden reports. The election pledge would apply even when the offence was committed earlier or the sentence had already been served.
Migration Minister Johan Forssell said the proposal is aimed at violence in close relationships and honour-related abuse. The party also wants to review residence-permit rules for people who leave violent partners, so their right to stay is not tied to the relationship they are escaping.
This is a party proposal, not a change to current citizenship law. It would require a detailed legal proposal and parliamentary approval before the Swedish Migration Agency could apply it. The Moderates have previously proposed citizenship exclusions for people convicted of gang-related crime and sexual offences.
The announcement makes citizenship and domestic violence part of the party's election platform, while leaving key questions—such as which offences would qualify and whether any time limit would apply—to later legislation.
