Several Liberal Party representatives in Sweden’s municipal and regional organisation have been removed or asked to leave, prompting an allegation that the party is pushing out internal critics.

Gilbert Tribo, the party’s former group leader in Region Skåne, told Sveriges Radio that those affected disagreed with the leadership. He described the changes as a purge of dissenters.

Party secretary Fredrik Brange gave a different explanation. He told the broadcaster in writing that some representatives had chosen not to stand for municipal or regional councils in the election.

The dispute concerns the group representing the Liberals within the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, known as SKR.
