Green wave lifts Sweden's Greens in preliminary local results

Sweden's Green Party made large gains in several closely watched municipal elections, strengthening its position in major cities and delivering a striking result in Gnesta.

In Stockholm, Miljöpartiet won 11.2 per cent in the preliminary count, up 5.1 percentage points from 2022, and secured 11 council seats.

The party also advanced in Malmö, rising 3.1 points to 8.5 per cent, and in Gothenburg, where it gained 2.3 points to 8.3 per cent and won seven seats.

Lund delivered another strong result: 13.9 per cent, an increase of 4.8 points and nine seats. In Gnesta, the Greens climbed 12.9 points to 20.8 per cent and tied the Moderates on seven seats.

The local gains give the Greens more weight as parties begin negotiations over municipal leadership and policy. They are substantial enough to justify talk of a green wave, but the pattern is not uniform: Sweden held 290 separate municipal elections, each shaped by local candidates and issues.

All figures remain preliminary. The Election Authority says late-arriving advance votes will be counted on Wednesday, 16 September, while final municipal results are expected within roughly two weeks of election day.
