Liberal breakaway parties win seats in two municipalities

New Liberal breakaway parties have won council representation in Flen and Habo, but failed to win seats in four other municipalities where they contested the election.

The parties emerged in response to the Liberals’ change of approach towards the Sweden Democrats, Sveriges Radio reports. Their results varied sharply across the six municipalities.

In Flen, Fria Liberaler won 9.4% of the vote, compared with 3.1% for the national Liberal Party. The Liberals had taken 3.8% at the previous election.

In Habo, Liberalt initiativ received 2.5%, which the preliminary result gives one council seat. The Liberals lost both of their seats there.

The new parties did not gain council representation in Ulricehamn, Knivsta, Enköping or Uppsala. The Liberals also lost vote share in each of those municipalities compared with the previous election.

The local breakaways therefore achieved their clearest gains in two places, rather than a broad breakthrough across the municipalities they contested.
