Sweden's government has told Försäkringskassan to shorten processing times and improve predictability for parents claiming temporary parental benefit while caring for a seriously ill child.
The agency must examine whether advance decisions could be used in long-term cases and how repeated applications can be handled with less uncertainty. The assignment also covers clearer information for families and more efficient casework.
Temporary parental benefit, commonly called VAB, replaces part of a parent's income when they need to stay home to care for a child. Families with serious or long-lasting illness can face repeated contacts with the agency and uncertainty over when payments will arrive.
The decision does not raise the benefit or automatically approve any claim. It requires Försäkringskassan to develop improvements and report to the government by 2 April 2027. Any wider rule changes would need a separate decision.
