Woman denied a job interview over her age accepts SEK 50,000 settlement

A woman who was 60 when she applied for a marketing job has accepted a SEK 50,000 settlement after an employer said it wanted someone at the career stage she had reached in 1994, when she was 28.
The applicant had asked whether her salary expectations explained why she had not been invited to an interview. The reply instead pointed to her earlier career stage, according to Kollega, which reported the case on Monday and interviewed her union representative.
Akademikerförbundet SSR initially sought SEK 70,000 to settle the age-discrimination dispute. After the employer refused, legal organisation LO-TCO Rättsskydd brought a claim seeking SEK 100,000. The employer offered SEK 50,000 shortly before the court hearing, and the woman accepted.
The payment resolved the dispute through a settlement rather than a court judgment. The report does not name the security company.
SSR representative Hanna Mikaelsson urged people who suspect age discrimination to contact their union, or the Equality Ombudsman if they are not union members.
