You can be married, committed and ready to share a Swedish address. For many couples, the emotional test is not the one that slows the permit. The apartment has to answer questions the relationship cannot.

Migrationsverket's page for people applying to live with a partner in Sweden says both adults normally need to be over 21, have a qualifying marriage, registered partnership, cohabiting relationship or plan to form one, and meet passport and location rules. The person already in Sweden must also be allowed to sponsor the move and, in many cases, meet the maintenance requirement.

That requirement turns the home into evidence. After an application is submitted, Migrationsverket says the person in Sweden may have to send a rental contract, the latest rent notice, and contract details showing the monthly rent, number of rooms, tenant, landlord, rental period and landlord signature. A sublet needs separate approval from the landlord, tenant-owner association or rent tribunal.

The agency's maintenance guidance makes the trade-off sharper: the home must be available for at least one year and large enough for everyone. Two adults without children need a kitchen or kitchenette and at least one room. Lodging with someone else, or living at home with parents, does not count as acceptable housing.

The money test then reads the same apartment through rent. In 2026, the sponsor must have enough income after tax and housing costs to leave SEK 10,314 for cohabiting spouses or partners, plus child amounts if children move too. A seven-year-old adds SEK 4,004 before reductions for child allowance and large-family supplement.

This is why a first-hand contract is not the only safe-looking document, and a real relationship is not the only fact that matters. A couple with steady pay may still be weaker if the rental period is too short, the rooms are too few, or the sublet permission sits with the wrong person.

There are exemptions, including for some well-established relationships involving Swedish, EU, EEA or Swiss citizens, and for certain refugee family cases. The practical move is to test the lease, approval, rent and post-rent income before filing, because those documents may decide how strong the relationship looks to the agency.
