Sweden will allow the Migration Agency to assign municipalities housing responsibility for up to 3,200 people with temporary protection in 2027, an increase of 400 from this year’s ceiling.

The Government’s new ordinance, published on Tuesday, takes effect on 1 January 2027. It changes the national limit on these housing assignments, rather than the number of people allowed to enter Sweden.

Under the existing framework, the Migration Agency calculates how the national total is divided between municipalities and informs them of their allocations. The agency then decides individual assignments within those limits.

The ordinance concerns municipal accommodation for people with temporary protection. It does not itself set a new deadline for residents to apply, or specify each municipality’s 2027 allocation.
