People who sat Sweden’s first citizenship test in August are still waiting to learn whether they passed. Results are due in late October, but some applicants can meet the knowledge requirement without taking the test at all.

The test covers Swedish society. Radio Sweden reported on 8 October that Ghada Nouairia, who took it in Stockholm in August, was still awaiting her result. Its report described the new test as a bottleneck for citizenship applications.

UHR, the authority running the exam, says the August sitting was a pilot. The pass threshold is determined afterwards, and the exact October results date has not been announced. Results will appear in candidates’ accounts and be sent automatically to the Migration Agency.

The alternative is qualifying social-studies grades. The Migration Agency accepts specified grades from compulsory school, upper-secondary education, municipal adult education and folk high school. It decides whether an applicant’s evidence meets the requirement.

Language evidence is separate: passing SFI course D can meet the Swedish-language requirement, but does not establish the required knowledge of society.

Registration for the society test is currently closed. UHR says details of the next sitting will follow this autumn; only applicants invited by the Migration Agency can register.
