Sweden Tightens Citizenship Rules, Including for People Already Waiting

The 2026 rules changed residence, income and conduct requirements, so an old Swedish citizenship eligibility date may no longer be reliable.

An old estimate of when you qualify for Swedish citizenship may now be wrong. The rules changed in June, including for people who had already applied and were still waiting for a decision.

The Migration Agency’s citizenship guide says the general residence period is now 8 years. Adults must normally prove identity, hold qualifying residence status, support themselves, meet conduct rules and show knowledge
