The Swedish cities with the strongest English-language job clusters
English-language vacancies are spread unevenly across Sweden. Our city-and-occupation map shows where your field has the strongest opening beyond Stockholm.
Searching for an English-language job in Sweden is easier when you stop treating the country as one market. Vacancies cluster around particular industries, and the strongest city depends on the work you do. A software developer, electrical engineer and specialist doctor should not begin with the same list of places.
DailySweden's review of 38,935 live vacancies from Arbetsförmedlingen's job-ad data and JobStream guide on 9 August found 2,181 English-language openings. Stockholm had the largest number, with 617, followed by Gothenburg with 316 and Malmö with 136. The national ranking is useful, but it hides smaller places where one profession creates a much stronger opportunity.
Västerås had 99 English-language vacancies, Ludvika 96 and Lund 78. Those totals are modest beside Stockholm, but they become more revealing when matched with occupation. Someone searching only Sweden-wide or only by city can easily miss the place where their own field is concentrated.

The clearest combinations outside Stockholm were software development in Gothenburg and Lund, electrical engineering in Ludvika and Västerås, and specialist medicine in Malmö. Gothenburg had 99 software and systems developer vacancies. Ludvika had 33 civil electrical engineering roles, while Västerås had 23 in the same broad field. Malmö had 35 specialist doctor vacancies, and Lund had 29 software and systems developer roles.
Those pairings give job seekers a practical starting point. Software candidates can compare Stockholm, Gothenburg and Lund before deciding where to focus applications, networking and housing research. Electrical engineers have a reason to look closely at Ludvika and Västerås, where a smaller general market contains a clear specialist cluster.
The city view and occupation view answer different questions. The city view shows the largest pools of English-language vacancies. The occupation view shows where demand is concentrated nationally. The combined view is the most useful when you know your profession and want to identify a realistic location.
Arbetsförmedlingen says its open data can be used to analyse and build digital services. Its advertising rules allow Platsbanken adverts in Swedish or English.
The language filter needs a careful reading. An advertisement that does not list Swedish as a formal requirement can still mention Swedish elsewhere or expect it during recruitment. Use the narrower result as a shortlist, then read the complete vacancy before applying.
Professional requirements matter too. Doctors and other regulated professionals may need Swedish authorisation or a recognised qualification even when the advertisement is written in English. Some technical roles can require security clearance, local presence or a permit that the headline does not mention.
Across Sweden, software and systems development was the largest English-language occupation group, with 401 vacancies. Civil electrical engineering had 110, electrical engineering technician roles 95, systems analysis and IT architecture 78, and mechanical engineering technician roles 75. Business sales and civil mechanical engineering each had 74.
