Swedish apartment construction rises 16% as house building falls
Sweden began building about 15,350 homes in the first half of 2026, 8% more than a year earlier, but the recovery was concentrated in apartment buildings while small-house starts fell.

SCB says multi-dwelling buildings, including special housing, accounted for 12,700 starts, up 16%. Small houses accounted for 2,650, down 18%.
The new total remains less than half the first-half 2022 level, when 33,792 homes were started. That points to a partial apartment-led recovery rather than a broad return to earlier construction volumes.
The figures are preliminary. SCB increased the 2026 new-build estimate by 8% to account for delayed municipal reporting. Its third-quarter release is due on 23 November.
