48% of Swedes less likely to summer in Europe because of heat

Extreme heat is pushing European summer holidays down the list for nearly half of people in Sweden. In a new national survey, 48% said the risk of extreme heat would make them less likely to holiday in Europe during future summer months.

The SVT survey found that 26% would be much less likely to go and 22% somewhat less likely. Another 36% expected no change, while 9% said they would be more likely.

The strongest shift was among older travellers. Among respondents aged 65 and over, 39% said they would be much less likely to take a European summer holiday, compared with 10% of those aged 18 to 29.

Indikator collected 1,863 responses through its randomly recruited Sverigepanel from 23 to 29 July. The response rate was 40%, with results weighted by sex, age and 2022 vote. The findings measure stated intentions, not bookings. For households choosing dates and destinations, the practical options are to avoid peak heat, travel in spring or autumn, or stay in Sweden.
