Sweden will send its Patriot air-defence system and about 100 military personnel to Poland in December to protect a supply hub carrying military and civilian aid to Ukraine.

The Armed Forces says the mission in Rzeszów will run from the start of December until the end of the year. It is planning for a possible continuation during the first half of 2027.

Personnel from the Air Defence Regiment will operate the system, with support from the Blekinge Air Wing, under NATO command. The Netherlands currently carries out the task.

The government announced the deployment on 6 October. It adds ground-based air defence to Sweden’s fighter-aircraft contribution from October, rather than replacing it.

Patriot uses radar to track airborne threats and can protect forces and infrastructure against aircraft and missiles. The Swedish unit’s job is to help keep the route supplying Ukraine protected.
