Sweden opens review of CSN income limits and long degrees

Students who work summer jobs or run out of CSN weeks during a long degree could see the rules change after Sweden opened a review of the student-finance system on Tuesday.
The inquiry must propose new levels for the income threshold, known as the fribelopp, and consider excluding summer earnings from the means test. It will also examine extra support weeks for courses of at least 360 credits and whether students should be able to combine CSN with part-time sick leave.
No CSN rule has changed. The review covers grants and loans for post-secondary studies and adult education, but not transition study support, upper-secondary study help or loan repayment.
Foreign citizens studying in Sweden can receive CSN only if they satisfy separate citizenship or residence conditions as well as the ordinary student-finance rules. The review does not remove that eligibility test.
The investigator, Henrik Ardhede, must report by 29 October 2027. Any recommended changes would then need further government, legal or budget decisions before taking effect.
