Sweden’s new digital ID will not work everywhere at launch

Sweden ID is a new state-issued digital identity that people will use to prove who they are online. From 1 December 2026, registered foreign residents will be able to apply for the app through the Police, while Swedish citizens will receive it with a new national identity card. The important limit is that a valid Sweden ID will not automatically open every Swedish website or app that asks for electronic identification.

The Police launch guide says applications open on 1 December 2026. People registered in Sweden who are not citizens can apply for Sweden ID on its own. Swedish citizens will receive it through the new identity card, and applications are available from
