Sweden seeks approval for NATO forces in Finland and Latvia in 2027

Sweden’s government is seeking parliamentary approval to deploy military units for NATO duties in 2027, including ground forces in Finland and Latvia and continued Patriot air-defence support in Poland.
The bill submitted on Tuesday sets proposed ceilings of 3,900 personnel for land forces, 850 for naval forces and 600 for air forces, through 31 December 2027. These are authorization limits, not a fixed deployment timetable.
Sweden is the framework nation for NATO’s forward land presence in Finland. The package also covers naval forces, aircraft and ground-based air defence, along with other operations that may become necessary in the North Atlantic area.
A Patriot deployment to Poland is planned from December 2026. The government wants it to continue during spring 2027, subject to parliament’s approval, according to its announcement.
The timing and scale of Sweden’s contributions within the proposed limits would follow NATO’s operational planning. Parliament has yet to approve the bill.
