Most surveyed in Sweden face barriers to preparing for a crisis

Nearly six in ten adults surveyed in Sweden say they struggle to maintain adequate preparedness at home. Cost, a lack of knowledge and competing priorities are among the obstacles, according to the Swedish Civil Defence Agency.

The survey found that 59% had difficulties preparing at home, while 39% felt poorly prepared or not prepared at all to help others during a crisis, the agency reported.

There was also an improvement: half said they could manage without help from public services for at least a week. That is a separate measure from the difficulties people reported in preparing.

The agency is launching a national preparedness year in 2027, seeking participation from households, workplaces, municipalities and voluntary organisations.

Norstat conducted the survey on 15–21 September among about 1,000 respondents aged 18 and over. The findings describe respondents’ assessments of their own preparedness.
